Mark Wood got the first breakthrough for England by dismissing Brendon McCullum.
Martin Guptill shared a 88-run opening stand with McCullum and later brought up his 24th ODI fifty.
Brendon McCullum helped New Zealand get off to a good start with a steady 35.
