In a format that has increasingly seen openers play a decisive role, one stat speaks volumes of Kolkata Knight Riders' position in the IPL 2026 points table. Their openers have collectively aggregated 587 runs at 26.68 in the tournament - the lowest by a fair distance - and almost half of GT's 1123. All of that despite Finn Allen's blistering knocks since his comeback to the XI, the recent one of those setting up for a crucial win with two more home games to go.

Team-wise contribution by openers in IPL 2026

Remove Allen's numbers since his comeback to the XI in May, and those numbers read: 347 runs at 18.26 (SR: 140.5). The defining feature in KKR's victorious 2024 run was the formidable Phil Salt - Sunil Narine pairing at the top. Having let go Salt thereafter, they struggled on that front in 2025, the average opening partnership of 22.33 and 9.24 both ranked eighth among the 10 teams. The corresponding numbers currently read 24.33 (10th) and 10.18 (6th) in 2026. Finn Allen and Tim Seifert's inclusion meant they had quality options this time around, with both enduring a fine run in T20s in recent years.

KKR preferred Allen over Seifert to start with, and it was justified given the latter's stellar run in the buildup, including a whirlwind century in the T20 World Cup semifinal at the Eden Gardens. Between January 2025 and IPL 2026 start, Seifert aggregated 2197 T20 runs (only exceeded by Sahibzada Farhan's 2458) at a strike-rate of 149.96. Allen's 1655 in the timeframe came at a far superior 196.32. KKR though, following a winless run and Allen's underwhelming results, got in Seifert, who managed 19 across three innings (two ducks). They had also tried Narine as Allen's opening partner in Chennai earlier in the season.

KKR's first two wins, courtesy of Rinku Singh's brilliance, masked the persistent struggles at the top, before Allen returned to ensure efficiency from his end. His elite boundary hitting presents a strong case as to why he is the best suited fit, given KKR's current setup upfront and their home conditions.

Allen in T20s since June 2025

Of the 98 batters to have faced at least 100 balls in the timeframe, Allen tops the strike-rate, and his boundary percentage is bettered only by Abhishek Sharma (33.77%) and Ishan Kishan (31.94). No one has hit as many maximums, the right-hander having smashed one in every six balls. For context, all openers combined in the timeframe have hit one in every 17 balls.

Overall, he has amassed 1976 runs from 58 innings at a strike-rate of 200 since January 2025. He has been even more destructive once set - come pace or spin - which further bolsters his credentials. It adds even more value given Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi's shortcomings in that regard.

Among the 52 batters to have faced at least 100 balls in IPL 2026, 17 have struck at under 150 including those two, Rahane's 130.72 being the third-lowest. Rahane's IPL strike-rate since 2023 against spin has been 122.46, compared to 160.08 against quicks. The corresponding numbers for Raghuvanshi read 134.9 and 153.25 respectively, both fairly inferior to what other top-order batters have been going at of late. Allen, on his day, can neutralise all of that. Against SRH, it was his onslaught against Pat Cummins that gave KKR a headstart in a 166-run chase, allowing Rahane and Raghuvanshi bat at a strike rate of 119.44 and 125.53 respectively.

With 10 more games to go, KKR have just about managed to hang in there in the race to the playoffs. Even if they miss out, they might have found an answer to at least one of the many missing puzzles for the next edition.
