Successful fourth innings chases

378 chased down by England is the highest ever by them in the fourth innings of a Test match, surpassing the 359 they scored against Australia at Headingley in 2019. In all Tests in English soil only once has a higher target been successfully completed - 404 by Don Bradman's Australia against the home side in Ashes 1948.

4 England have now successfully chased 250 or more in four straight games following chases of 277 at Lord's, 299 at Trent Bridge and 296 at Headingly. No other side has done it more than twice. England also become the first side to achieve the feat four times in a season bettering Australia's three successful 250+ chases in the 2005/06 season. Of England's top eight run chases, three have come in their last three Tests.

1 There was just one previous instance of a team successfully chasing down a 300+ fourth innings target against India before England's win in Birmingham. Australia chased down 339 against them at the WACA in 1977 with two wickets in hand. This is the third successive away Test India have failed to defend the target in final innings following defeats in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Root's redemption

9 Hundreds for Root against India - the most by any player, surpassing eight each for Gary Sobers, Viv Richards, Ricky Ponting and Steven Smith. Root now has 2526 Test runs at an average of 63.15 against India which is only behind Ponting's tally of 2555 runs. Root's aggregate of 737 runs in this series is only behind Graham Gooch's 752 runs in three Tests in 1990 when it comes to rubbers between India and England.

32 Average for Root in fourth innings at the start of English summer after 37 innings with a highest score of 87. In this summer though, he has so far hit 115* at Lords, three at Trent Bridge, 86* at Headingly and 142* at Edgbaston taking his fourth innings average to 41.51.

Bairstow's golden summer

6 Hundreds for Bairstow in 2022 - the joint-most for an England player in a calendar year in Tests. Bairstow equalled Denis Compton (in 1947) and the Yorkshire duo of Michael Vaughan (in 2002) and Joe Root (in 2021).

4 Bairstow became the fourth English player to score four centuries in a span of five innings. The sequence started off with the second innings century against New Zealand at Trent Bridge (136) followed by 162 and 71* at Headingley and 106 and 114* in this Test. Bairstow emulated Wally Hammond, Peter Parfitt, and Graham Gooch in doing so.

The Yorkshire duo

269* The unbeaten partnership of 269 for the fourth wicket between Root and Bairstow is the highest for the fourth wicket in fourth innings of a Test match. The previous record holders were Graeme Wood and Craig Serjeant who put on 251 against West Indies in Georgetown in 1978.

1 There is only one partnership for any wicket in fourth innings for England higher than the unbeaten 269 between Root and Bairstow: Paul Gibb and Bill Edrich put together 280 in the timeless Test against South Africa in Durban in 1939. The previous highest partnership in fourth innings of a Test against India was 216 between Roy Dias and Duleep Mendis in Kandy in 1985.

India's horror show

132 India's first innings lead. This was only the second instance of India losing a Test match after taking a 100+ first innings lead. The only other instance it happened was against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2015 when they ended up 63 runs short of the target despite a 192-run lead.

6.22 Economy rate for Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur in the Test match - the worst ever for India's change seamers in a Test match (15+ overs). They conceded at 6.16 in the first innings and 6.26 in the second.
